I'm a relatively new writer, but I'm encountering some issues when writing stories. I often go to write down my story and I have the scene in mind, but I can never seem to be as descriptive as I'd like to. I just want to know some tips on how I can be more descriptive in my writing so I can set the scene better and write better stories.

Word of the day stuff works. Endeavour to use more and more random words in every day life. Before long you'll use it in your writing. Also, go to the beach or park or somewhere and just write down words that you feel, see, smell about the park. Then write a description of the park. Before long you'll be writing entire sonnets about the clouds in your morning coffee.

A method that I like to use is to match the mood of the character and the scene to the environment. That helps to narrow down what aspects of the surroundings you will highlight and the kinds of descriptive words you use.

Think of your life daily and describe things you see in detail, this could be in your had or you could write it down. Sometimes I describe something inside my head and I love the way I worded it so much I just have to write it down. This should help you visualise the things you are writing in more detail.
